Having been a Latter-day Saint, lo these many years, I thought I might explain the answer.
The Real Name
Latter-day Saints are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
What that means is that we are happy followers of Jesus Christ.
Some folks call us Mormons because of our belief in the Book of Mormon. But Mormon is a nickname. It was first used as a slur against us back in the 1800s, and, in good-natured fashion, we tried to turn it into something positive.
However, we prefer to be called by something that accurately describes us. Mormon was an ancient American prophet. We appreciate him like we appreciate other ancient prophets such as Abraham, Moses, or Paul. But we do not worship him. We worship Jesus Christ. He is the one we believe is our savior.
Some of the preferred names are:
- Members of the Church of Jesus Christ
- Members of the restored Church of Jesus Christ
- Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
- Latter-day Saints
The most important thing to us is our faith in and desire to follow Jesus Christ.

It should be clear at this point that we are folks from all over the world who are striving to follow Jesus Christ by keeping his commandments and loving others.
Some of us do a better job than others at this. Some of us struggle. And some of us forget to show up to the meeting.
My Experience
Trying to follow Christ has helped me feel closer to God, given me great joys, and helped me to focus on just being nice to those around me.
I’ve received what I feel are answers to my prayers and direction in my life.
And while I’m no paragon of virtue, I’ve been steered toward things that have increased my happiness and away from addictions and errors that surely would have hurt those I love and wrecked many joys.
All in all, it’s been a tremendous thing for me.
